Illuvium review: what you can still play in 2026

Illuvium is still running in October 2026, but only part of it is playable. The Arena autobattler gets patches every couple of weeks and a new Deathmatch mode has been added, while the open-world Overworld has been offline since January and is being rebuilt as a smaller MMO aimed at December 2026. This review explains what you can play today, what happened to the rest and what the ILV token looks like now.

Risk note: ILV and Illuvium’s NFTs are crypto assets, and ILV trades more than 99% below its 2021 peak. Deathmatch also has a paid mode with cash-out prizes. Nothing here is financial advice; only spend money you are fine losing.

What Illuvium is

Illuvium started as one of the most expensive bets in blockchain gaming: a high-budget fantasy world where you capture creatures called Illuvials, then fight with them in a separate autobattler. Its games launched to the public on 25 July 2024, according to the official news portal, through the Epic Games Store. The assets lived on Immutable X until this year.

What happened to the Overworld

The Overworld was the part most people bought into: walk a large alien planet, fight and capture Illuvials, then take them to the Arena. It closed because of a chain migration. When Immutable folded Immutable X into its zkEVM network (we covered the background in our Immutable X explainer), every project on it had to move.

Illuvium’s migration guide, published on 19 January 2026, set the schedule. Reward payouts paused from 22 January. From 26 January the Overworld was shut down, with the team saying it would reopen with the full MMO release. Items and Illuvials were to be moved to zkEVM and stay tradable in the meantime. ILV, ETH, USDC and sILV2 balances were migrated by Immutable itself.

Two details matter if you held anything. Every migrated asset had to be relisted by hand on the zkEVM marketplace, so old listings did not carry over. And many items switched from one NFT per item to the ERC-1155 standard, which stores identical items as a single entry with a quantity. Your 300 copies of a D1SK are now one line in your wallet with a count of 300.

Illuvium Arena is the part you can play today

Arena is an autobattler. You place your Illuvials and your Ranger on a board, set synergies between their classes and affinities, and the round plays out on its own. Gauntlet mode stayed open even during the migration, and the game has kept a steady patch rhythm since. When we visited the news portal on 15 October 2026, the latest patch was Arena 1.18.9, dated 13 October, with earlier ones on 16 September and 1 October.

Seasons now run as short Event Passes. The current one, Abyssal Chasm, runs from 7 to 27 October 2026. Only Ranked Gauntlet matches earn the Arena Points that move you along it. There is a free track for every player and a premium track that costs 800 Fuel and pays out stronger Illuvials, Fuel drops and XP boosts. Premium holders can also enter a closing tournament with a $500 prize paid in ILV.

For a new player, the free track is the honest test. If the autobattler loop does not hold you through one 19-day pass, the premium version will not change that.

Deathmatch adds permadeath and a paid mode

The newest addition is Deathmatch, a ten-player free-for-all where you choose one Challenger and a starting spot, then watch. Fighters that place badly can be removed from circulation for good. Skirmish is the only mode so far, and it comes in two versions.

  • FREE mode costs nothing to enter. Only first place is guaranteed to survive, second and third get a 50% revive chance, and the rest are lost. You earn Bones, a currency you cannot withdraw.
  • STANDARD mode costs 100 Skulls to enter, about $1, because each Skull is pegged at $0.01 and can be cashed out. Each match pays 900 Skulls in rewards and feeds a jackpot with a 1% chance of triggering.

Each Challenger has health, attack, an Omega ability and a tier. Base power is capped between 10 and 50 before modifiers, and the team itself says positioning and matchups still decide a lot, so even a maxed fighter can go out early. One extra rule rewards aggression: whoever scores first blood is always revived.

Read that second mode for what it is: a paid entry, a prize pool and a random jackpot. If you live somewhere that treats this as gambling, or if you already struggle to stop at one more round, stay on FREE mode or skip Deathmatch altogether.

The ILV token in 2026

ILV is Illuvium’s governance and staking token. CoinGecko’s project summary describes the original promise that game revenue would flow back to people who stake it. When we visited CoinGecko on 15 October 2026, it listed ILV at about $3.30, with a market cap near $27 million. Its all-time high was $1,911 on 30 November 2021, so the token is down about 99.8% from the peak.

Supply is small by crypto standards, roughly 8.3 million circulating out of about 9.6 million in total. With so few tokens in circulation and a market cap that small, partnership news or a large holder selling can move the price sharply in either direction.

The MMO plan and the money behind it

The studio’s own numbers explain why the Overworld has not come back yet. On 21 August 2026, co-founder Kieran Warwick said six months of cost cuts and a further wage reduction had added more than 12 months of operating runway, as reported by eGamers. Almost the whole remaining team is working on the MMO, which is targeting December 2026.

The scope has shrunk to make that date. Governance documents from February describe an MMO that reuses existing assets and moves player-versus-player features to after launch. The studio has not published its current cash balance; the last public figure, from December 2024, put monthly burn at roughly $900,000.

Smaller releases are also planned for 2026. Primal Tactica, built by an outside studio under licence, was due at Steam Next Fest in October with early access later in the fourth quarter. Loadout has no date yet.

Should you play Illuvium now?

Try Arena if you like autobattlers such as Teamfight Tactics and want to see what a well-funded crypto game looks like in practice. The download is free, the free Event Pass track gives you a proper feel for ranked play, and you do not need to touch ILV to do it.

Wait if what attracted you was the open world. It is not playable, and a December target from a studio that has narrowed the project more than once should be treated as a plan with no guarantee attached. Do not buy land or Illuvials on the hope that the MMO will raise their value.

If you are weighing other card and creature games, read our Gods Unchained guide and our list of the best NFT games. If Arena is the draw, install it, play the free track until 27 October and decide from there.
